Gooseberry Patch Review: "Homestyle in a Hurry"

One of the delights of life is eating with friends.
-Laurie Colwin

Homestyle in a Hurry is the latest cookbook from Gooseberry Patch and it came into my life at the perfect time. I've already started working on my New Year's resolutions for 2011. One of my main resolutions for the new year is to save money by cooking more and eating out less. Homestyle in a Hurry is filled with recipes that contain inexpensive ingredients, most of them are probably already in the pantry. And, the dishes come together in 30 minutes or less.

I found appealing recipes from breakfast with Megan's Cinnamon Pancakes to appetizers such as Heavenly Warm Corn Dip and Creamy Spinach Spirals. If you're like me, you're always looking for appetizers that are cheap, easy, and crowd-pleasing. I can sometimes get in a rut with my side dishes. Yes, there are many ways to cook pasta and rice, but sometimes we need some vegetables. I can't wait to try Country-style Pepper Cabbage and Barb's Bacon Green Beans. These sides will go perfectly with Sourdough Chicken Casserole and Super-fast Tilapia Parmesan. Of course, dinner isn't complete without dessert and Chocolately Chewy Brownies are the perfect ending to a warm winter meal.

January is the perfect time to hibernate in your home and cook hearty and satisfying meals for your family. And, if you save a few bucks, then all the better. Invite some of your friends over to share some of your new recipes from Homestyle in a Hurry. They'll enjoy your dishes and will appreciate that you're helping them save money, too.

Here's a sample of what Homestyle in a Hurry has to offer. Please click on the recipe's title for recipe and step-by-step directions.

  5. ... definitively... I'll give it a try to the Chocolatey Chewy Brownies... they look marvelous! The only bad thing with the Gooseberry Patch Cookbooks is that with so many delicious recipes you try and try and try... and finally you get two things for sure: a bigger belly and a thinner pocket! Don't you think? Ha ha ha ha ha.

  6. Yes, I do have a bigger belly to show for it! Ha!! I do love my GP cookbooks, though.

  14. I would love to win this cookbook. I am recently retired and now have time to cook again. I made a similar recipe (green beans / bacon) for Christmas and they were a big hit. I did use the Chocolatey Chewy Brownies recipe 1/9/11. My oven seems to run a little cool, so when I reduced the oven temperature to 325 (at your suggestion) it took about 15 extra minutes for the brownies to be done. They were certainly worth waiting for. Like the teenagers in your review, I couldn't wait for them to cool. Tonight (1/10/11) I opened the box of brownies I stored in the freezer and had one right out of the box. They are delicious and very easy. I don't think I will use a mix again. The only change was that I used Pecans instead of Walnuts ([1] because I live in Texas, and [2] because I had more Pecans than Walnuts.

  15. Thanks for posting, Judy. We're all about pecans here in Georgia, too. I prefer them to walnuts. I do love homemade brownies. You can make them just as quickly as you can whip up a boxed mix. Sometimes, I find the boxes on sale for $1.00. I do try to keep them in my pantry just in case I need them for other recipes. If you have a box, try the Brownie Crackles cookies on the Santa's Bakery page. They are wonderful.
