Chocolate Pinwheels

Christmas is over and I'll have to admit that I miss having a multitude of cookies to choose from for dessert. So, I was in the mood for something sweet but fast. I didn't feel like getting out the mixer or measuring anything. But, I kept thinking about this sweet "snack" that I saw in my newest cookbook, Gooseberry Patch's Homestyle in a Hurry, copyright 2010. I thought it would be perfect to satisfy my sweet craving. If you like the chocolate turnover at Arby's, you'll love this chocolate pinwheel. You can have these whipped up and in your mouth in about 15 minutes flat.

Chocolate Pinwheels

11-oz. tube refrigerated bread sticks
3/4 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 c. butter, melted
1/2 c. sugar

Unroll bread sticks and cut them in half. Press chocolate chips in a single row along the top of each bread stick half; roll up into a pinwheel. Arrange pinwheels on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Brush with melted butter; sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes; until golden. Makes 16.

Although the recipe stated that it yielded 16, I only made 12. The breadstick servings may have changed since the recipe was developed.

Unroll the dough and break in half where perforated.

Place the chocolate chips along the dough.

Roll up like a pinwheel. Hence, the name...chocolate pinwheels.

Brush with melted butter.

Sprinkle with sugar. Now, I only sprinkled a small amount of sugar. I will be more generous next time. Yes, there will be a next time. Bake for about 12 minutes. Eat warm!!

I may have eaten one or two while typing this post. OK, so I ate three. I'm not proud of it, but I couldn't help it. They were warm from the oven and the chocolate chips were ooey, gooey, and delicious. I highly recommend these.

Enjoy!

  2. These are a little too wonderful. I've baked and eaten a second batch. The only thing that stops me from working on a third one is running out of chocolate chips. I'll put those on my shopping list. Please try them.
